How do you transfer apps to a new Android phone?

If/when I get my HTC One X, how do I transfer the apps from my HTC Desire S? Can I download them for free? Will the ones on the SD card work without any problems?

I'm afraid the apps on the SD card that you currently have installed won't work on the new phone just like that.
Play (euch!) will attempt to download all of your apps that you have previously downloaded.
IF... you sign in straight away and are connected to WiFi it's a good way to get everything back (except the data of course).
Or you could use the backup feature of Astro File manager to backup all the APKs you have onto your SD card and then you can install again from there.
Or..... root your desire, install Titanium backup and that will allow you to backup your data as well as the APP. If you do this though DON'T backup and restore your system settings. That's a bad thing ! :)

Wouldn't the new device need to be rooted too to use Titanium?
Though Titanium would enable you to keep your data for the apps too which I don't think Google play will and will back up apps (if any) that you didn't get from the Android Market/Google Play.
And yep it would be free to download them again, as they are linked to your google account not to your device.

@pondlife, you are correct about having to root the new device. In my haste I forgot to mention that bit.

That could be a problem initially then, though doubt it'd be for long

Emm, I think it is easy to transfer apps to a new Android. In both the android devices configure Google Play with the same Gmail ID. Then in your Google Play account purchase list you will have list of all the apps that you have downloaded till date. Just plug the required device and download the app that you require to the device you desire.More details: http://www.transphone.net/phone-transfer/android-apps-to-android.html

You can only transfer apps from Android to Android operating system, can't move to other system. I suggest you try Mobile Transfer program to transfer apps and other data from your phone to another phone.

It can transfer all data from Android to another android:

Both phones are powered by android, making its possible to transfer apps between the two phones. There are a couple of free apps that can help you move apps from one phone to another in quick an easy way. I currently use Mobiledic Phone Transfer to move content from one device to another. you can check the details here:

If both of your phone are Android, then you can use Android transfer tool, if your phones run different OS, then you have to download phone to phone transfer software.
