When I travel more than 10 miles, I cannot use my phone to make/receive calls or texts. Screen displays 'Emergency calls only'. Is this something to do with my settings? How can I use my phone?

That usually means you're out of coverage. Or the sim is inactive.
It would help if you told 'us' what network you're on, and whether you have a fully functional device at home or anywhere else.
You could also try to use your sim card in another phone (one on the same network, obviously - a friend's or family member's) in that area where you have no service.

I've sorted it out now, I am with TalkTalk and the phone is fully functional. I changed the settings, and also left WiFi on. That seems to have worked. Thank you for replying.
