yea, sorry, forgot to add that in!

You can't. 3 Mobile UK does not have 2G network and that's why you do not have this option in the menu anymore. You can turn off cellular data, but turning off 3G puts phone in emergency mode.

ah, thats cool, i guess i can live with the slightly decreased battery life in exchange for a cheap contract! Thanks for your help!

Yes, they are cheap, have bad coverage (compared to O2 and Vodafone), come with really good 3G speeds and stable network. They are only network to allow unlimited data for 15 quid/month on pay as you go.

hmmm well so far the coverage doesn't seem too bad for me (All networks have good coverage in london), and after quidco cashback, i'm effectively only paying £5.45 a month :)

Not when you are indoors. But they are cheapest available and if you have signal their data is around 3.5Mb/s. I don't know why everyone is so fascinated with GiffGaff.

hmm i'm indoors and workks fine, although i can't speak for signal deep in a building...
Well giffgaff was an option, but went with 3 purely cause it was cheaper, was on t mobile (chitter chatter £6 a month, but then found that i couldn'y last with only 100 text!)
