What happens if you turn off background data on Android?

Which apps are affected if you turn off background data on Android? (Settings > Accounts & Sync)

Market, for one. Email. The rest? Depends on what apps you have. Some won't work cause they wanna show you lovely fresh ads. Other won't work cause they need to contact a server etc...
It's different from app to app - you gotta figure it out yourself.
On the plus side: it will improve battery performance. You could pin a shortcut/widget to the homescreen, to easily enable it when needed; though, most apps will tell you if/when they need it and offer you to open the settings app!
