The most popular types are:
Bog-standard LCD - On something like the Galaxy Ace
Super LCD - Slightly better technology.
IPS LCD - The best LCD available for phones, used on the iPhone and Nokia 701. Excellent colour accuracy and brightness.

AMOLED - An LCD has a backlight and a screen layer, AMOLED is a different type of technology, which combines the two. As there is no backlight, blacks are as dark as they get. Colours are very vivid and saturated (but not particularly accurate). On phones like the HTC Desire.
Super AMOLED/ ClearBlack AMOLED - A brighter, less reflective version of AMOLED.
Super AMOLED Plus/ Super AMOLED Advanced - Again, slightly brighter and a bit sharper because of more sub-pixels.

Whether you prefer Super AMOLED Plus or IPS LCD is a matter of taste really.
