AFAIK, the unbranded version of the Orange San Diego is called the Lava Xolo X900 - at least in India where it is available sim-free. I believe in Europe/UK Orange have the exclusive for now...

The San Diego and the Lava Xolo are "technically" different phones, in as much as they have different model numbers and when custom ROMs are made for them, they won't be cross-compatible.
Otherwise, Jan's right, there's no way to get an unbranded San Diego in Europe at the moment. Even if there was, as with ZTE's Orange branded phones, buying them non-Orange branded makes them a hell of a lot more expensive.

From what I've read custom roms will likely be cross compatible with some behind the scenes work from the devs, but the stock roms won't be. Also read that could be tricky to get roms up and running for it though.
Unless they manage to get the hidden sd slot working I can contain any interest though.
