Is it jailbreaked? Anyhoo, have a look here
If that seems weird and complicated, you might try a phone repair shop in your area. They should do it for £15 - £20

Thanks. No it's not jailbraked or broken which ever the term is! We've tried the phone repair shops and a couple of online places with no success.

if after you unlock the phone, you either restore or update the ios which i know removes the jailbreak, will this also remove the unlock?

@jskyner, I have no idea about any of it!

What is says is: a proper unlock like the one promised in the link IS PERMANENT! You can update firmwares, do a restore etc etc the phone remains unlocked! There are half-assed solutions that'll break with the next OS update, but a real unlock lasts!

@anft, thanks, this is to unlock iphone on vodafone uk, but have mailed them with my problem which is one locked to vodafone ie!

JanSt / MOD  Mar. 12, 2011 at 14:46

alexiaewing, I'd say they'll be able to unlock an Irish one, too.

alexiaewing  Mar. 12, 2011 at 16:37

@JanSt and @jskyner, thanks, it turns out what I thought, it is not possible to unlock it yet! was going to sell the phone but maybe I'll just hold onto it until that time arrives!

alexiaewing, i too wish to unlock my iphone from vodafone.ie..have you found out if this is possible or if vodafone.ie provide the service or allow you to unlock it?

JanSt / MOD  Mar. 31, 2011 at 07:15

Vodafone Ireland will provide you with an unlock code at the end of your contract. If it's a prepay iPhone, you have to have topped up by a certain amount in the past 6 months - I believe 130 Euro. Is the iPhone registered with IMEI on vodafone.ie? Then you can log into your account and enter the IMEI to check for / request the unlock code.
Otherwise ring customer care. Be friendly but firm.
An indie phone shop takes 20.00 or thereabouts to unlock it. But there could be problems if the iPhone is on the latest iOS.

You cannot unlock iPhone 4 with baseband from iOS 4.2+. Don't bother trying. All website promising to do it is a Hoax.

Once you upgrade to certain baseband it's not possible to unlock iPhone in legal way.
You can try links here http://www.iphonehacks.com/unlock_iphone
to see if you can figure out which baseband you have.

My suggestion would be to call Vodafone and ask them if they can unlock it. They would notify Apple and all you would need to do is plug your phone into iTunes and it will be unlocked. I don't know if Vodafone can unlock iPhone, because only a few carriers have agreement with Apple.

A bizarre yet totally true story! A work mate gave me her iPhone which she thought she had water damaged (she woke up in the night with phone in her bed, went to put it on floor but dropped it in her glass (1" full) of pepsi - took it out straight away... Woke up, tried to turn phone on (it wouldn't) so she presumed it was bust and got sim free replacement from apple.
3 weeks later I asked about old iPhone - it's broken you can have it if you want it? Which I did!!! So took it home (all boxed etc) plugged it in etc - worked fine!!! Phone died in her bed before it fell in pepsi! Pepsi had no effect!!

Anyway was informed by various Market stalls it could be unlocked for £70 - which I didn't have!! So called Vodafone (my mates provider) i explained what had happened - they said put a voda pre pay Sim in it and credit with £20 - then email details to their network unlock dept...
Week later I was fed up waiting and happened to be in Covent garden - apple said Nowt to do with em it's voda who lock em - voda said exact opposite and guy in store said he's never known of one to be unlocked before!!!
Emailed this to voda... 10 mins later they said connect to comp now - it was unlocked!!!

Yeah it works PROPERLY and is cheaper than most at £20 but be very forcefull!!!!

phonestuff  Mar. 13, 2012 at 12:08

I have found a really good quick cheap service £21 on ebay: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/110840767047?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649

I can confirm that some private stores are able to factory unlock iPhones. Any iOS version and any iPhone. This eBay solution could be legit, if stores can do it I don't see why not service cannot be offered online.
I have not tried this Ebay service, so cannot comment on it.

I got one off my friend, he'd got a contract one delivered to him, but vodafone systems were down and didn't register any iphones that weekend so gave him a new one and told him to do whatever with the first one. So he waited 3 months just in case, and then sold it to me. I got a vodafone pay as you go sim, toppped it up £20. Went to online chat with vodafone, gave them the imei number, the phone number and told them it was a pay as you go phone that I bought from a friend. They took the £20 credit and it was unlocked 3 days later.

That is Vodafone UK, right? In Ireland (as asked by the OP) you need to have spend €140 in past 6 months with THAT phone ;)

I'm sure it will still take a uk sim card and won't be locked to the country. Therefore he can still get a Vodafone uk sim card and do what I did.

They are locked to the country ;) Irish Vf handsets do NOT work with Vf Uk sims and vice versa. Same O2 etc etc.... Different ROMs and all ;)

JanSt / MOD  Mar. 31, 2012 at 16:24

...also: have a look at Irish vs Uk operator websites: often the handset ranges differ quite a bit...models and prices; so they have an interest in keeping the 2 markets apart.

hi people check out tech-point1 on ebay, they do iphone unlocking

NB I let this stand because they have good feedback, but they advertise Vodafone UK unlock, not Vf Ireland. Different thing!
