Unlock mobile phone for free?

Is it possible to unlock your phone yourself or do you really need to pay for a code? I have an iPhone 3GS.

The iPhone 3GS can be unlocked by jailbreaking it first and then unlocking it through a tool such as Ultrasn0w.

So the answer is yes, (though it depends on your baseband and OS), but its a no if you do not wish to jailbreak your iPhone.

With a Jailbroken iPhone I think you can unlock it for free, but the unlock disappears when you update the device, removing the JB....

If you have a non-jailbroken O2 iPhone, they will unlock it for you - it's free if you're on contract and I think £10 if you are PAYG.

There is no code for iPhones - they have to be unlocked by Apple. Your provider will ask Apple to unlock your phone and it will be permanently unlocked next time you plug it into iTunes.

Any online or store unlock method will be using some variation of Ultrasn0w. Any official update (via iTunes) will lock your phone again.

What is your iOS and baseband version?
