What should I upgrade to after my Nokia N900?

I’ve had a Nokia N900 for ages and wondering which phone I should upgrade to next. I’d like something similar, made by Nokia if possible.

Good question, I too am in the same boat. Unfortunately it looks like Maemo developments will slowly die out as Nokia abandon the small tablet factor in favour of winmo.

I spotted the desire z too but I think the N900 is fine for the moment so will be hanging on to it. :-)

I am in the exact same boat at the mooment with my N900. I did see the HTC desire Z with the slide out keyboard which seemed rather nice, quite cheap too.
Nokia are releasing some poor mobiles at the moment (in terms of the operating system & usablity and what you can do with the device), so I am going to stay well clear.
I am mainly using my N900 for web browsing and would like abigger screen, so I think I have decided on the Samsung Galaxy S2.
It is Android so support Flash websites, bright screen, good video rcording and a 4.3" screen which is huge and great for web browsing.

Massive assumption here but I asume the reason you got the N900 was because you like the tweakability of the phone and are a little bit of a geek (no offence intended :-) )

If so you may like the look of this phone, which surely comes with a massive amount of geek kudos:

Windows 7 and symbian on a mobile? Whatever next :)

Well, the MeeGo N9 has just passed through the FCC.... It will launch.
That aside, do you want an N900 type slider?
The hp Pre3 will launch in June. It has cool specs, and webOS is very similar to Maemo - REAL multitasking, terminal etc etc...(in fact, the Nokia N900 can run webOS apps - that is HOW similar the two are)

ive got a rooted desire z running at 1.2ghz most of time.can take it up to 1.5 to make emulators run smoother etc. it is best phone i have had .. but with the sammy s2 and the htc sensation ,atrix etc.. dual core is the way to go.
i am awaiting the first qwerty dual core before contemplating an upgrade.

Nothing wrong with being a geek, Stelph. Isn't that why we're all here? (_;)

I'm thinking I might wait n see what happens with the N9. Failing that maybe the Pre3 or the HTC Desire Z......

Anyway, thanks for your thoughts, everyone! :D

Hi, I'm looking to upgrade from a N900 too. I'm not a geek, just always liked Nokias for ease of use and in my experience Nokia have the most user friendly cameras. I love the camera, music player and memory of the N900 and the little pull out stand but was really disapointed that I can't send or receive pictures or video call. Carphonewarehouse have recomended I steer clear of Nokia and think I should go over to HTC but I don't know if this is a commision thing or something, They said that any new phone is better than the N900 but I don't think they understand what I want from a phone. I don't want to end up with a Lemon :s

I got a Samsung galaxy s2, absolutely awesome, so responsive.
Camera is great quality and easy to use.
Android is so custodians, if you don't like the keyboard layout, messaging all, etc etc just download a new 1.
It has 16gb built in too. But if that's not enough just buy a sd card.
The only issue I've had is some files do not want to download, so I have to use opera browser for that.

Hi julesvanlint,

I think I know what you mean. I had a Nokia N900 since launch (and usually an E-series device for everyday use when battery life is vital).

The last couple of years or so I tried quite a few more "up-to-date" devices - Android, iOS, webOS, WP7, Bada. And although some were overall way superior to the N900 and other Nokes, not a single device in the last 12 months has felt like a "keeper".

I'd love a remade N900 - a 4in screen with multitouch and gorilla glass and a good processor.. Looks to me like it's not gonna happen.
As to the little kickstand you like: the HTC HD7 has one. But it runs WP... OS-wise nothing like maemo :(

As to your impression that CPW were badmouthing Nokia: yes, I notice the same here in Ireland, and not only in CPW. Nokia was for too long in a position to strongarm retailers, and now you can taste "payback" in a lot of sales talk. No, Nokia's handsets are not as smooth as the new breed, but they are not without merit.tery life is vital).

jan you spammer ;)

tbh mate if you are a fan symbian and nokia phones it maybe worth waiting for searay which is nokia's windows phone. But i would say try out android especially the samsung s2 which imo is the best phone around.

JanSt / MOD  Oct. 2, 2011 at 10:11

Treab, I used an SGS2 for 2 weeks. It's a great phone - probably the "best" Android, but I wouldn't use a Google thing fulltime.

WP7/7.5 even made by Nokia is not an option. I liked winmo for its tweakability. WP7 is Microshaft adware. I don't need that :p

matt101101 / MOD  Oct. 2, 2011 at 11:30

Jan, what's wrong with, "a Google thing" :p? Apart from the email client...lets skip over that, quickly ;).

JanSt / MOD  Oct. 2, 2011 at 13:00

Matt,
Android's okay, but so is the Deutsche Autobahn. I shall leave it at that :p. ;)

matt101101 / MOD  Oct. 2, 2011 at 13:27

Your analogy has lost me :p...

JanSt / MOD  Oct. 2, 2011 at 13:43

Good, or Lewis Curdie's tonsilitis flares up again ;)

Treab  Oct. 2, 2011 at 13:46

umm... wow... you 2 are off the charts nuts arent you ;)

matt101101 / MOD  Oct. 2, 2011 at 13:51

So as long as I stay lost, Lewis stays Tonsillitis free...:p? Doesn't make sense to me, but that seems to be a good thing for Lewis.

Taking the conversation back a step, to before it got...odd, the Autobahn is great, bar the lorries obviously, you can absolutely gun it and not get arrested for doing so. I've only used it once but my god it got the most out of my old RS Focus ;)

Treab  Oct. 2, 2011 at 13:54

he nearly topped 22 miles per hour ;)

matt101101 / MOD  Oct. 2, 2011 at 14:00

Don't mock the RS :p, it'll destroy pretty much anything under £100k in a race involving corners...then came family life, and it had to go for a boring Audi A6 :(

#Goodtimes

Treab  Oct. 2, 2011 at 14:03

it will not even compare to the radical or the Ariel atom (and the atom costs 35k) hell the cateram 7 will kick it into touch :p

typical lawyer driving an old mans car :p

matt101101 / MOD  Oct. 2, 2011 at 14:10

Can't put your kids or shopping in an Atom, or a Caterham, or use them when it's raining...Focus had a boot and a roof at least :p, even if the ride was bone shakingly hard haha :D.

The A6 isn't a bad car, it's comfortable and if you really stamp on it, it'll shift since it's got a 3.0 petrol V6, just has no spark or feeling to it :(. The wife's Fiesta Zetec S is a million times better to drive, even if it won't do crazy speeds.

Treab, that ^^^^^ beats any Durex advert haha :D. Zafira's are for people who don't understand birth control, as are all 7 seat cars, hell, the Durex advert should just be a 30 second still image of a Zafira haha :D.
