I'm usually using more than one phone and I don't 'do' contracts. I'm still occasionally using an old Nokia N9.

Every 2 years - currently have the Note 3 and contract expires Oct 15 which is in time for release of the Note 5

That ^^^

I don't take out contracts which come with a phone, so I can get a new handset whenever I see one that I like.

+1 to ^^^ that. I'm currently carrying a Lumia 1520 and a 930, but if anything else interesting pops up in the near future I'll certainly be found playing "musical handsets".

Dito,
I keep one reliable phone until it dies. Or something I need is no longer supported.
And when I find something tempting, I may buy it, keep it, or sell it on....

Until something dies, usually. Coming up to 3 years on this one.
