Virgin Mobile’s unlimited everything SIM only deal: any good?

I updated our colossal guide to the Best UK SIM only deals last night, but the problem with housing around 100 SIM only deals in the one feature is: we can’t exactly delve into tons of detail about each one.

Which brings us here, quite possibly the first in a series of features digging deeper into individual SIM only deals, and asking, quite simply: are they any good?

First under the microscope, it’s Virgin Media/Virgin Mobile’s unlimited everything – minutes, texts and data – for £20. They claim it’s the “UK’s best value”, but we’ll be the judge of that.

Seven of the best UK SIM only deals

Occasionally, the best way to grab a new phone – if you have the bucks lying around – is to buy the thing outright (‘SIM free’) and grab a tariff that simply gives you a SIM card and a monthly allowance (‘SIM only’). Or maybe your contract is up and you’re looking for the most cost effective way to keep your current phone in action before upgrading.

In either case, we’re looking at seven of the best UK SIM only deals at present, essentially one for each of the Big Four (Three, O2, Vodafone, EE), plus three MVNOs (mobile virtual network operators). Ready? Go!

EDIT: Be sure to check out our new feature Best UK SIM only deals. We've highlighted some of the best tariffs, and listed more than 100 UK SIM only offerings.

ZTE Blade Q Mini: £60, 4in, dual-core, 5MP, exclusive to Virgin Media

Lewis Curdie  Jan. 17, 2014 at 14:00

At 4.5in, the original ZTE Blade Q was already fairly “mini” by today’s standards (the HTC One mini and Samsung Galaxy S4 mini are both 4.3in), but make way for the ZTE Blade Q Mini; it shaves another half inch off the already pocket-friendly ZTE Blade Q.

The good news: the ZTE Blade Q Mini is priced £60. The bad news: it’s exclusive to Virgin Media for now.

Virgin Media Wi-Fi launched at 20 additional London Underground stations

Lewis Curdie  Dec. 12, 2012 at 16:00

Virgin Media’s Wi-Fi rollout on the world’s oldest underground rail system is fair cracking on.

EE’s free London tube Wi-Fi boast quickly retracted

EE’s free London tube Wi-Fi boast quickly retracted

Okay, it’s not quite on the same level as Carphone Warehouse’s Nexus 4 faux pas, but we have another example here of a company jumping the proverbial gun in semi-hilarious fashion.

Orange and T-Mobile’s tag team, EE, boasted on twitter that its customers should expect free London Underground Wi-Fi in early 2013, but it now has “nothing to announce”.

Virgin offering ZTE Kis Android smartphone for £50

Lewis Curdie  Jul. 12, 2012 at 12:00

It’s been a good week for entry-level phones. Earlier this week we met the Motorola Motosmart, and now Virgin Mobile is joining the budget party.

The network is offering a little something called the ZTE Kis on PAYG for a decidedly wallet-friendly £49.99.

Sky: mobile network rumours are silly

Sky: mobile network rumours are silly

Lewis Curdie  May. 29, 2012 at 14:00

It’s no secret that Sky detests Virgin Media, regularly denying Team Branson channels and content and that. Remember the dark days when Sky 1 disappeared from Virgin’s TV service?

As such, it’d make perfect sense for Sky to take the fight to the mobile arena. Rumours of a Sky mobile network recently reached fever pitch, but the media beast says it ain’t happening.

ZTE Tania coming to Virgin Mobile in May

ZTE Tania coming to Virgin Mobile in May

Lewis Curdie  Apr. 27, 2012 at 14:00

The ZTE Tania is quite a memorable little smartphone, if only because it has the worst name ever. Like, ever. Soon to be followed by the ZTE Sandra, ZTE Linda and ZTE Mags.

Mockery aside, it also hopes to stand out as a cheapish Windows Phone offering, and Virgin Mobile for one is jumping on board the Tania Train.
