Virgin use the T-mobile network so it should be seamless.... unless it comes up as tmobile while it's 'roaming' onto the Orange t-mobile network.
Is the 'switch' seamless or do you see the x come up on the signal bar between networks?

When I first switch it on, I get the cross and no signal. Then I get T-mobile and it switches directly to Virgin so the switch there is seamless

Aha.
OK x means the radio hasn't turned on
T-Mobile being the carrier network comes up first
Virgin appears once the Radio (phone bit of the s2) has settled down and shows the network provider.
I take it this only happens when you first turn on?
My friends HTC Hero does the same with no signal, O2 then Tesco.
Nothing to worry about.

Yes this happens only when I first turn it on, but it takes about a minute. So cos I'm on a contract, if I make a call before it changes to Virgin, will I get charged by T-mobile or will it come off my minutes? Thanks for your help

This is nothing to worry about. T-mobile is the carrier network and Virgin the provider network. Same s**t, different colour. You won't get charged for 'roaming' to T-mobile while it doesn't say Virgin.
