Cheap if you use 25MB/day option. Expensive otherwise - around 60p to £1 per 1MB.
Keep in mind that 25MB/day option is only available on Vodafone network. If you go to any country (Austria) that does not have Vodafone, roaming will in between 60p-1 quid range.

Well said, CT. OP, where are you going? You could always get a local sim.

PS if you go to a country that doesn't have a roaming agreement with Vodafone, you should ask Vf for an unlock code so that you can use a foreign sim. Vodafone Ireland do that, and I believe other networks will too.

Vodafone unlocks free of charge in UK and no questions asked.

does that apply to prepay phones that you haven't used much? Usually with those you need to have topped up by a certain amount before you get a free unlock code. That is what it's like here, anyway.

Does not matter which phone. I was able to unlock PAYG phones and business contract ones (without having account details). You must have Vodafone SIM in the phone and it has to be active. I guess that takes care of top up as you have to put minimum amount on it to activate.
Vodafone said that their system need to identify phone first, which explains why phone needs to be active on the network. Vodafone will email or text unlock code and procedures to your SIM.

So, we are being scr*wed in Ireland? Here you must have spent €160 in past 6 months to get a prepay handset unlocked!!!

After you try Vodafone in UK it's very hard to use something else. Best coverage and best customer service. I'm not saying that either one is great, but it's much better compared to any other provider. I doubt a lot of people leave Vodafone and they know about it.

I need Skype calling, so I'm stuck with Three. I would go with Vodafone otherwise.
