Vodafone to offer Huawei Ascend P1 from early AugustDespite the odd hiccup along the way, Huawei's 2012 global conquest is slowly but surely gathering pace.

A few weeks ago Vodafone started carrying the budget Ascend G300, and it seems the exercise has gone well, as now we're hearing the beefier Ascend P1 will soon be joining it in Voda's ranks.

And while it's not quite in the league of the much-delayed Ascend D Quad, there's certainly enough here to make it well worth considering if you're coming up to upgrade time.

Appearance-wise, it's one of those ridiculously thin efforts at just 7.7mm thick, an effect only exaggerated given the 4.3in screen size.

And rest assured, that screen may be big but it's also very clever, being a qHD (960 x 540) Super AMOLED number.

In the engine room is a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM and 4GB of ROM, while the camera offers 8-megapixel stills capabilities and 1080p video recording smarts complete with dual-LED flash, partnered by a 1.3MP forward-facing cam round the front.

All the connectivity bits and bobs you'd expect are present and correct too, though given the quality of the video cam it would have been nice to see a mini-HDMI port located somewhere around the Ascend P1's skinny sides.

You do at least get Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box – at this point in the game, anything other than the most basic of Android handsets really has no business coming with anything less – and Vodafone is lining up to offer Huawei's latest from early next month on plans starting at £26pm. It'll be available on PAYG too, we hear, though the price has yet to be confirmed.

It's also not clear at this stage whether this means we'll also be seeing the Ascend P1 S in the UK - the P1's pricier sibling which manages to bump the battery from 1,670mAh to 1,800mAh while shaving a full 1mm off its already slender profile. This despite initial hopes that it would be touching down back in April.
