Warning: Update 4.3.1 can brick your iPad if you update on PC

Just a quick heads-up, guys. If you're using a PC (especially a laptop or netbook) to sync your iPad, be aware that a major error can cause your iPad to completely brick during the 4.3.1 firmware update. Many users - including myself - have reported this problem, which causes the update process to freeze halfway through flashing the firmware and rendering your iPad completely useless.

If this does happen to you, you'll need to restore to factory settings and then restore to a backup. Hold the power and home buttons if you can't get it off of the black screen of death or loading bar.

I've just been prompted to upgrade my ipad to 4.3.1 from itunes on my PC. Scared to do so now!

I must have tried to update at least a dozen times. Each time after a long wait - as long as 3 hours on one occasion it says "the network connection times out" this happened each time when it got as far as "processing file" Nearly given up!!

Sorry but it's not completely useless if you can restore factory default and then restore backup. That's sensationalism worthy of a crappy tabloid.

Had to do this with ipod too btw. May be down to how full the device was, mine was jam packed.

I don't think it's sensationalism... maybe hyperbole or FUD but it's a valid point. If my parents were to update their iPad and it got stuck as JonLester's post describes, I'm not sure they would know how to fix it like you or I would.

At least they would get a visit from me, and I would get a free dinner out of it :)
