How do waterproof phones actually work? Like how do they stop water getting in through the ports? Surely some water would get in you left the phone in a glass of water? Or are they completely sealed?

There are basically 2 ways: One, you basically seal of the inner workings with a very very fine membrane. Ports have waterproof covers... (like the Sony Xperia Z that can survive 30 minutes in a meter of water)
Two, every part inside is covered in a water repellant...ahem...stuff, that also protects against corrosion without interfering with electrical currents...
