Being adopted by scores of devices from a host of manufacturers is clearly a huge advantage for Android – and, hypothetically at least, Windows Phone 7 – in the OS Wars.
If you fancy a spot of webOS action, HP is your only bet at the moment, but that could be set to change, according to CEO Leo Apotheker.
As Bloomberg reports, in an interview held in China, Leo revealed that HP has been in talks with other manufacturers about webOS.
“We are talking to a number of companies,” Apotheker teased. “I can share with you that a number of companies have expressed interest. We are continuing our conversations.”
Three people “with knowledge of the discussions” mentioned Samsung, with one in particular specifying the Samsung Galaxy Tab. Intriguing.
“The reality is that Google and Apple are in the driving seat here and consumers are voting with their dollars,” observes Shaw Wu, Sterne Agee & Leach analyst. “The problem for HP here is how do they license it without competing with their own products?”
In any case, don’t get too excited just yet. Leo declined to mention timescales, and added: “there is no time pressure to do this.” Nyoh.
