Dial shortcode: 901 or you can just hold down the digit button "1" that has the the voice tape symbol.

I have tried to rerecord my answer message after the prompt "press # to rerecord your message" I do so, leave a new answer message, but I still have the generic message set by google. Can anyone help please?

My personal message works fine on voicemail. Have you followed the instruction here?

http://www.o2.co.uk/support/generalhelp/howdoi/voicemail901/howtogetstarted

Personalise your greeting:
Your Voicemail 901 is automatically set up with a default message that greets your callers. Or you can record your own. Here's how;

•Dial 901
•Press * for greetings and mailbox settings and then 3
•Follow the prompts

You use the same prompts to change your greeting, as and when you need to. Handy if you're away on holiday.

Not sure what's this got to do with Google unless your handset is not setup right in the first place. Try this;

Set up or remove Google voicemail:

Prevent voicemail from picking up calls:

Deactivate Google voicemail on your phone:
Deleting your phone from Google Voice will not actually prevent your voicemail calls from going to Google voicemail. In order to switch back to your carrier's voicemail and deactivate your Google voicemail on your phone:

1.Click the gear icon at the top right of the Google Voice page
2.Select Settings.
3.Click Edit under your forwarding phone number.
4.Select Deactivate and follow the prompts.
