First time I hear that...
Sure it's not ghosting? Have you rebooted (left the phone of for a few minutes)? Still there?

Judging by my experience with Samsung's service centre, I would say your chances of getting it fixed for free are tiny. Especially considering you want the expensive display replacing, I only wanted the bloody £5 headphone jack changed.

As for burn-in, my S2 had the notification bar permanently burnt in by the time I got rid of it, though by the sounds of things it wasn't as bad as yours is. One of the reasons we don't see SAMOLED+ displays anymore (despite being a better technology) is because they suffer from screen burn more easily and generally don't last as long as the PenTile SAMOLED displays.

My advice, check whether your S2 has a visible water damage indicator behind the battery and if it does, take a picture of it (with a time stamp) and include a copy of it in the box when you send the phone off, might put Samsung off trying to pull the same B/S they did with me.
