Where’s the iOS Google Maps app?

Where’s the iOS Google Maps app?Apple replacing the trusty Google Maps app in iOS 6 with its own 3D Apple Maps has proved massively controversial (stay tuned for a separate Apple Maps: a bit rubbish? feature later today).

Many users turned to the App Store in the hopes of finding the promised Google Maps alternative. Alas, it ain’t there, and no one seems to be quite sure if it’s coming at all.

According to “roundabout sources” of The Guardian, Google is rather enjoying all the negative press surrounding Apple’s 3D Maps.

Those same sources add that Mountain View is prepping a Google Maps app for iOS 6, “which will appear in time”, but note that it’ll be subject to Apple’s approval, and may be rejected on the grounds that it "competes with existing functionality".

Meanwhile, 9to5mac is hearing that Google has in fact already submitted a Google Maps app to the App Store, but note that Apple took a year to approve Google Voice.

However, The Loop’s typically terse Jim Dalrymple says - On the rumor that Google has submitted an iOS 6 Maps app and Apple is sitting on it – simply “Nope”.

Lewis, you might want to remind people that they've still got maps.google.com to fall back on, if they actually need to be anywhere in a timely fashion.

Yep, that's mentioned in the feature. 1pm ;)

I shall look forward to the bashing of an Apple product, as always :p.

Don't get ahead of yourself...we'll have the utterly boring 5S to endure first ;).

Just watched this. Has some good points.

Simply fire up the Safari web browser, head over to maps.google.com, click the Share button at the bottom and then tap "add to the home screen". This will add a shortcut to your home screen pointing to Google Maps, which throughout our hands-on testing has already proven much more helpful than Apple Maps.

There should be a way (Jan knowns) to get Nokia maps also.

Same but with maps.nokia.com I would assume. I loaded it on wifi netbook and clicked location and it actually told me where I was which I wasn't expecting.

Anyone think Google could charge for new ios Google Maps?
Don't think they could reject it from the store there are other map providers on there already, one did a sneakily timed upgrade yesterday

barrybarryk  Sep. 21, 2012 at 13:46

I'd laugh if they did, but they won't

I don't really get what all the fuss is about with the maps application, sure it's not as good but it's software, it's not like it's entirely outside the realms of reality that it'll get an update.

Pondlife  Sep. 21, 2012 at 13:55

Of course it will get updated but they made such a big deal out of the maps software at the ios6 show off and the i5 launch so hardly a surprise that it gets a kicking when it's this rough.

barrybarryk  Sep. 21, 2012 at 13:59

Why? The millions of people queueing for a piece of hardware on day 1, which hasn't been properly tested or reviewed by anyone have only themselves to blame.

Edit: same with the iOS6 update

Google would rather have more users seeing more ads, than have direct app revenue that limits the userbase and is only a one-time payment.

There are ads in Google Maps?
