Apple replacing the trusty Google Maps app in iOS 6 with its own 3D Apple Maps has proved massively controversial (stay tuned for a separate Apple Maps: a bit rubbish? feature later today).
Many users turned to the App Store in the hopes of finding the promised Google Maps alternative. Alas, it ain’t there, and no one seems to be quite sure if it’s coming at all.
According to “roundabout sources” of The Guardian, Google is rather enjoying all the negative press surrounding Apple’s 3D Maps.
Those same sources add that Mountain View is prepping a Google Maps app for iOS 6, “which will appear in time”, but note that it’ll be subject to Apple’s approval, and may be rejected on the grounds that it "competes with existing functionality".
Meanwhile, 9to5mac is hearing that Google has in fact already submitted a Google Maps app to the App Store, but note that Apple took a year to approve Google Voice.
However, The Loop’s typically terse Jim Dalrymple says - On the rumor that Google has submitted an iOS 6 Maps app and Apple is sitting on it – simply “Nope”.
