Will.i.am's i.am+ iPhone add-on: 'genius phone' coming on December 6 from £199

Will.i.am's i.am+ iPhone add-on: 'genius phone' coming on December 6 from £199Just recently we covered Black Eyed Peas' tech-savvy Will.i.am and his foray into consumer electronics with an iPhone-enhancing camera add-on – you know, the one that turns the Apple smartphone into a “genius phone”.

Well it's now been officially priced – and will go on sale on December 6, just in time for Santa's big mid-winter gig. But hopefully you've been saving up, as you're talking £199 just to get into the game.

The idea behind the i.am+ foto.sosho range is simple: it “takes over” the iPhone's camera capabilities, using its own sensor and flash to boost resolution to 14MP and deliver interchangeable lens capabilities. The latter is covered by standard, fish-eye, wide and zoom lenses.

There are four models in the range: the V4 and C4 (for the iPhone 4) and the V5 and C5 (do we need to spell it out?). The V model is the Vintage design that's been most regularly photographed (including the above shot), while the C or Contemporary design is more rounded and understated.

But enough of all that. The bottom line is these camera-packing iPhone docking bricks start at £199, with the Vintage one costing £299 complete with slide-out keyboard, and will go on sale from December 6 exclusively at Selfridges. Which says a lot.

It's the kind of price tag that requires not just a good idea well executed, but the kind of design that screams desirability and exclusivity. We'll let you be the judge of that, but if you do decide to throw your money at Will.i.am's one-of-a-kind techie venture, why not get all foto.sosho and send us some pics? Fo sho.

Hope Selfridges don't need the stock room these will be taking up...
Too many yes men around the guy I guess.
Modern look? Is it the eighties again?

Yep, that is one hell of an eyesore, so you not only pay 200 for what I'm guessing will only be a marginal improvement on what is for the average user a pretty decent camera but it also makes the chic iphone look like a children's toy.

No Zoom? The cretins, that would be the only thing that would make this worthwhile

Pondlife  Nov. 29, 2012 at 13:17

Going back to what was in the other article.

Explaining the inspiration behind the accessory, Will says: “I was just hanging out [after a photo shoot], and one of the models took an iPhone picture, which circulated the planet before the shoot was even over.

“I took one of the photographer’s lenses and held it up on my [phone] and said: ‘Imagine this one day.’ Then I said: ‘I’m going to do this.’

So the picture that "circulated the planet" was probably compressed to hell online anyway to fit on a website rendering it a bit pointless?

And either the camereman's lens was as tiny as this or he got seriously lost as to what he was trying to do..

But it's got three interchangeable lenses what more would you need....

Nah, he was a little late to that particular product that he was descriving (tho it would be nice if a more reasonably priced version came out)

Full size lens on that sensor is a flawed idea anyway.

And it's not the ugliest add on...

£200 will buy you a real camera far better than the one on the back of an iPhone (or any phone, bar possibly the 808, for that matter).

Pondlife  Nov. 29, 2012 at 21:10

Possibly smaller than that add on too

This or a Nikon D3100 for under £300... Hard one that.

more like Will.I.Ain't looked around a few kickstarter projects to see what idea's he can nick, for his alien retro looking bling bling camera from the 80's for a pre-runner to his x-factor style entrepreneur show with mr syco tv himself!

Sarek2k +1 You saved me from having to rant.

Every time I look at that picture I feel an odd mixture of complete bafflement, revulsion and an almost undeniable need to chuckle heartedly.
Something I want to see sales figures on even more than wp8 phones...
