Windows 8 to Surface on October 26

Windows 8 to Surface on October 26A couple of weeks ago, Microsoft’s resident - how do I put this? – attractive older lady, Tami Reller, told us we could officially expect Windows 8 pie in October this year.

Now we know exactly which date to mark our in diaries. Got a pen? It’s October 26 – just a tad over three months from now.

The Windows 8 release date was confirmed by Steven Sinofsky at Microsoft’s annual sales meeting, and reconfirmed for absentees in black and white on The Windows Blog.

We’re told that Windows 8 will be available as an upgrade and on new PCs come October 26.

Lots of questions in the comments section about the Microsoft Surface release date, but nothing official just yet. We're thinking it'd make sense for the Microsoft Surface to be a launch device, though it sounds like M$ maybe isn't 100% ready to confirm.

I scribbled yesterday that Intel is tracking more than 20 Intel-based Windows 8 tablets. And don’t forget the ARM-powered chaps. They’ll of course be running Windows 8 RT.

Exciting stuff. Are you holding out for a Windows 8 tablet, or – like Jan – rolling your eyes at M$?

The RT is a launch device, with the pro being released 3 months later. Ballmer announced it during the press announcement, I don't know how much more official you want it to be.

Are you and LC talking about the same thing?
Also: there is no firm release date/dates, afaik...

Surface for Windows 8 RT (the ARM one, whatever they're calling it) will be available at the launch of WIndows 8 through their online and retail stores, the pro following 3 months later. Pretty much his exact words during the surface reveal.

Looks like Big Boy Barry is right, however the initial reports were a little hazy, with some simply saying there was no release date (technically true, since there was no release date for Windows 8 at the time), and others saying "around launch". In any case, MS isn't exactly making a huge song and dance about it. The blog post (link above) was tiny.
