Does Windows Phone support AVI?

Can you watch AVI videos on Windows Phone without converting?

Nope. But usually Zune will convert them before you sync them to your WP phone.
But note: AVI is just a container - there is an endless variety of .avi versions (due to possible combination of audi and video formats inside the container), You're bound to hit that one AVI file that Zune simply won't accept.
If convenient video watching is your priority, WP is not the best choice. Android, iOS, MeeGo...heck, Symbian even are all less fickle and restrictive.

MX Player for Android seems to play everything I throw at it :).
