One of the things our Jan has been crying out for – for what feels like years – is a Facebook phone, and it’s been one o’ them rumours that just wouldn’t go away.
However, Jan has reached his “lowest point in years”, with the news that the Facebook phone almost certainly ain’t happenin'.
Since then, rumours have persisted that HTC was working on a Facebook phone codenamed the HTC Buffy – named after the kinda hot but decidedly annoying vampire slayer.
We’ve also heard the suggestion that Facebook would design its own device with the help of former Apple engineers, and – slightly more ridiculous – that Facebook would buy Nokia so it could build Zuckerberg a mobile.
However, speaking on a quarterly profits call, Zuckerberg dashed the dreams of millions, suggesting that the Facebook phone “really wouldn’t make much sense for us to do.”
Instead, Facebook will focus on apps. Zuckerberg explains: "We want not just to have apps that people use, but be as deeply integrated as possible, where other apps can build on top of Facebook.”
And that’s the end of that. Maybe.
